S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun)

Message for aspiring artists:
Don’t write things because your management tells you to.
Though I love mine,
they can make my job harder.
Sometimes they cause me to confuse the reasons,
the meaning,
the feeling that I reach for everyday,
and sometimes grasp,
and sometimes celebrate.

They are scared,
That you will not understand,
Sawed Off Shotgun.
So they want me to explain it to you.

They are scared,
Because of Columbine.
Because of Paris.
Because of Las Vegas.
Because of white kids with guns.
Because of fools who misinterpret the meaning of freedom.
Because of fools alike who misinterpret the word of God.
Because of the NRA.
Because of Ted Nugent.
Because of Isis.
Because of Trump.
Because of Slavery.
Because of misogyny.
Because of Ike Turner.
Because everyone is scared.
Because everyone is pointing fingers,
and drawing lines in the sand.

I don’t blame them.
I am scared too.
But I will not explain my song to you.

If you like it,
I hope you understand that I wrote it for you.
If you don’t,
I hope you understand that I wrote it for you too.
If you are hurting,
I hope it helps.
If it doesn’t,
I am sorry for that.
I know that some people know feelings that I do not.
Just know that I am not celebrating anyone’s sadness.
I am not celebrating a thing in the world,
with this song.

I am sad too.
Because of Ritalin.
Because of AR-15s.
Because of Fentanyl.
Because of Jesus.
Because I can’t pay the rent.
Because of Detroit.
Because of Flint.
Because of John Wayne.
Because I keep having panic attacks and going to the hospital.
Because of Lena Dunham.
Because of The Bank of America.
Because of Syria,
a country that was beautiful before the war - but we wouldn’t know.
Because I miss my girl.
Because of Robert E. Lee.
Because of the Clintons.
Because my mother just returned from surgery,
and I was scared the pain in her stomach was cancer.
Because of Cocaine.
Because of McDonald’s.
Because of Jordan B. Peterson,
who I can’t help but agree with on a couple things,
not all things,
and I don’t even know if that’s okay anymore.
Because I miss Campo Viejo.
Because California is turning grey.
Because of the Marlboro Man.
Because the litter on the side of the road in Prince Edward Island is probably from Ontarian tourists.
Because I am still trying to figure out who I am,
without alcohol dancing in my veins.

I would like to know your reasons,
whoever you are.
Not for comparison,
or debate.
But to feel.
To grow.
To learn.
I want to feel like you,
though I never will.
And sometimes I don’t,
because I’m scared of the pain.
But I hope we can try,
You and I.

As for the song,
know this is true.
I only wrote it,
because I love you.

Screen Shot 2018-05-11 at 11.25.49 AM.png

Unfortunately due to some circumstances beyond our control we will not be playing the Kansas City date with The Struts at The Truman on May 17th. Our apologies to anyone who was hoping to see us, we promise to be back again before the end of the year.

We are still playing at Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, AL on May 18th and continuing with the rest of the dates as scheduled.

Opening For The Rolling Stones

Tuesday, June 26th we get to open for The Rolling Stones in Marseille, France.

I’ve been to three Stones concerts. My mother’s been to about 10. Growing up, they were rock and roll personified in my household. They were the gods that we measured ourselves up to when we started this band. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to get out in front of them and steal all their fans.

See you in France! Tickets are available here.

Juno Award Winners!

I don’t feel different waking up today. Don’t get me wrong, yesterday’s Juno award is highly appreciated, but it changes absolutely nothing for us as a band. The process is still the same: One song at a time, one show at a time, one fan at a time. This is the formula that has allowed us to cultivate a love for what we do, and a fan base who feels the same. The real reward for me has been the phone calls, texts and posts from all of our friends, fans and family. It feels as if a whole community won the award. It is with that sentiment, that I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. This is nothing, if not the beginning.

Love always.
Brett and the boys.

Cover of Kanye West's "Runaway"

Back in December we had a great week visiting London UK. While we were there we did a session at this incredible spot called Fiction Studios. It's literally a film set of a library, turned into an audio recording studio. The vibe in there is amazing. We recorded a couple of tracks with video, including this cover of Kanye West's "Runaway".

Koster is a gigantic Kanye fan and he’s been covering the song for years. We played it in a church once together, and my voice just kind of worked with the song. I can remember listening to “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” and watching the short film all the time in University. It is by far my favourite Kanye album. I had never heard rap sound like that before. In my opinion, this album is one of the most important of the 21st century, and “Runaway” is one of the most perfect pop songs ever written.
— Brett

The track will be available globally on audio streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music tomorrow, so stay tuned. We hope to enjoy!

Followed that up with our biggest headline show to date, nearly 6,000 people filled the K Rock Centre to celebrate it's 10 year anniversary with us. The next morning we jumped in a van to the airport and flew to Berlin to begin our 12-date European tour!

First the video. This track has had such an incredible reaction over the last few months and we couldn't be happier with the visual. Directed by Colin G. Cooper in Toronto last month, Brett had the following to say:

It’s nice getting your hands dirty once in a while. The video was a quite enjoyable and painless experience, other than getting smashed in the face with tomatoes. Thank you to our director Colin and his crew for the outstanding work and fun day.
— Brett Emmons

You can check out the video below or on VEVO. Please share it on your social networks and help us spread the word!

In addition to the video, we're also excited to announce three new tour dates in the UK for March 2018. We're making our UK debut tomorrow night at The Old Blue Last in London, and will follow that showcase up with the following headline shows next year:

Kingston Show February 24th - SOLD OUT

We're so excited to announce our homecoming show, scheduled for Saturday, February 24th at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston. This show also celebrates the K-Rock Centre's 10 year anniversary, after The Hip opened the venue back in February of 2008.

First of all, it’s good to be home. Secondly, to play a stage like this where I’ve seen so many great artists perform over the last ten years is an honour and a privilege. Three years ago this wasn’t even fathomable. We’re coming off our biggest Canadian tour to date, and to come back home and celebrate with our friends, our family and our city is extremely fulfilling.
— Brett Emmons

Update (11/24): Tickets for this show are now sold out. Thanks to everyone who purchased!

Well, fuck. This is exciting. Thanks to everyone who grabbed tickets, the hometown show is sold out. We will see you in February to celebrate!
— Brett and the boys
